Description
A couple of weeks ago I noticed a rather large, and very busy wasp nest tucked in the corner, under the eaves behind the tall new forsythia growth near our back door. At its widest part the nest measures about 12 inches across. It is out of the way and the wasps, which are actually beneficial little creatures, are not bothering anyone, so I've been fascinated as I watch their diligent progress each day. One member is frequently stationed at the lower opening with his wings beating like crazy as he stays in one spot. Wasp air conditioning? A close look at the picture reveals several members adding to the edges of the nest sections. It's quite amazing to see how much is accomplished each day.

Thanks so much for your kind comment, Kathy! At the end of the season I removed the almost weightless nest and kept it (still in my garage) for heaven only knows what reason!! It is fascinating to be sure.

It has been so fascinating to watch them every day, totally oblivious to my presence (behind a window of course) within mere inches of their work. I did an online search and now can even identify their markings. The stripey patterns, I learned, are from different kinds of wood they chew into pulp for their building material. What an awesome experience to have them so up close and personal!
