Description
In response to a challenge (http://www.lesliesaeta.blogspot.ca/2012/12/thirty-paintings-in-thirty-days.html) I have chosen to use a theme of butterflies from photos I have taken at the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I plan to do pen & ink sketches, then paint them with watercolour.
This is Day 4 The Sapho longwing butterfly is primarily found in Costa Rica. The ventral (under) side of its wings, as shown here, are black and white but when open, the dorsal (upper) side sports a brilliant blue patch between the white sections. Sapho longwings will only lay their eggs on the passion flower plant.

Peggy, this is a beautiful painting of a very handsome butterfly (unknown to me). Love the delicate contrast the delicate plant provides..
Peggy King replied:
Glad you like this, Ann... I plan to do a painting of this one with wings open - there is a lovely blue that shows up in the sunshine.
